First performed in 1853 at La Fenice in Venice, Italy, Verdi’s La Traviata, or The Fallen Woman, tells the tale of Violetta Valéry, a famed courtesan, whose ill health foretells a tragic end to her great love affair with Alfredo Germont whose disapproving, powerful father tries to destroy their relationship.
